Khadija's Last Three Letters From Prison
On April 26, Investigative reporter Khadija Ismayilova’s cell was searched and she was reprimanded for her three recent letters she wrote from jail.
In her statement at the Court of Appeal on April 28, Ismayilova said she escaped the solitary confinement because of the European Games. She was informed by the head of the detention center Azer Seyidov.
Azadliq Radiosu presents you a summary of her three recent letters.
The Game of Being European
In this letter, Khadija questions whether Azerbaijan really needs the European Games. She offers a list of suggestions that make Azerbaijan European and which would also be cost effective:
- Just like all other European heads of state, Aliyev too should sign income statements and make them available to public. Other state officials should follow suit. This would keep them from stealing from people and keep their incomes transparent;
- Each time there is an international event organized in Azerbaijan, the budgets should be made transparent. This way, people will know how much money is spent on what;
- Get rid of an economy based on monopoly and allow local brands to flourish;
- Just like it is in all other European states, we too should not have political prisoners;
- Have free and independent media and set an example for Europe;
- Ensure political freedoms, free and fair elections, have opposition representatives in the parliament and stop going after critics, threatening them, silencing them and forcing them to leave the country.
None of these require millions writes Ismayilova.
And perhaps if the true intentions behind hosting these games is development of our land, perhaps we put aside love for our pockets and government and really give our land a thought.
The Fuss About Pardoning
Please don’t humor me writes Khadija in this letter talking about the working group on human rights. She questions the working group and its credibility in relation to their work they have done so far with political prisoners. She considers the working group as part of the show put on by the Azerbaijani government.
“As if there were no previous pardons before them [the working group]” writes Khadija referring to recent pardons and release of some of the political prisoners.
Hajj
In this satirical letter Khadija writes about personal sins Ilham Aliyev asked for forgiveness during his recent pilgrimage to Mecca. He must have prayed for the following writes Khadija:
- I shall not trait my people;
- I shall not steal government’s property and appropriate;
- I shall not arrest innocent people;
- I shall avenge the blood of innocent
But then Aliyev quickly reminds himself that he is there for a reason, that he came to Mecca to negotiate with Muslim countries especially now that the price of oil has fallen. Repentance can wait for another time.
