New charges against Khadija Ismayilova
February 13, Ismayilova was charged with a series of additional crimes ranging from embezzlement, illegal business, tax evasion, and abuse of power.
At least five more prominent activists who are held in pre-trial detention are currently facing similar charges. All were detained over the summer at the time when Azerbaijani authorities launched an unprecedented crackdown over foreign funded non-governmental organizations and a number of other international organizations such as IREX and NDI.
If convicted Ismayilova could face up to 19 years in jail.
In her most recent letter, Khadija wrote "looks like they couldn't find anything substantial in their previous accusations so they are thinking of a new story to tell". She wrote she was questioned not becuase of the "crime" she is currently being charged with (incitement to suicide) but with regard to her journalism work and that additional charges to be expected from the Prosecutor Office. She was right in her projections.
