Ilham Aliyev's press-secretary unhappy, accusing U.S. State Department spokesperson of double standards
Azer Gasimov, urged the U.S. Department of State and the European Union to address their own in-country human rights violations before they pick on Azerbaijan. "Prosecution of mass media representatives in this country is becoming prevalent, journalists get arrested while doing their job, and law enforcement authorities maintain full control over the phone conversations of massmedia employees and their correspondences on the internet" said Gasimov in an interview with local media outlet.
Amid criticism of the west, Gasimov fails to mention the cases of blackmail against Azerbaijani journalists, including against Khadija Ismayilova focusing instead on the "great achievements in ensuring democracy and fundamental human rights".
