During his visit in New York for the UN General Assembly, Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov gave hints to what is next for Azerbaijan. A possible membership to the Eurasian Economic Union is on the table.
In an interview with sputniknews.com in New York, Mammadyariv said, "Azerbaijan is interested in expanding its relations with the Eurasian Union. However, Armenia's presence within the union creates serious obstacles for Azerbaijan and its membership".
The Eurasian Economic Union includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia and is widely seen as one of the groupings the Kremlin is using to increase its clout in former Soviet republics.
In May of last year, Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy, Shahin Mustafayev said Azerbaijan has no intention of joining the Economic Union.
