On May 31, Ilham Aliyev's oldest daughter Leyla Aliyeva announced on her Instagram account that she was officially splitting up from her husband of 9 years Emin Agalarov. Shortly after her post, Emin Agalarov himself, shared a similar post.
Two days before the announcement, on May 29, Emin Agalarov, singer, songwriter spoke to the UK's The Wright Stuff show on Channel 5. Emin talked about his new album and his growing fame in Russia. Answering the question by the show's host, Richard Madeley on how was it to be related to a man associated with corruption, and leading a country were he rigs elections, Agalarov said first of all, he was not a politician to comment on that. "Secondly, I am an artist. Being married is a family matter. I think it should be completely irrelevant to the music" said Agalarov.
"Ilham Aliyev is only my father in law given if this marriage will last", added Agalarov.
Two days later the couple announced their decidion to divorce.
Emin Agalarov is the son of an influential Azerbaijan businessman and founder of Crocus Group in Russia. He married Leyla Aliyeva in 2006. The couple has twin boys.
