Khadija shares her thoughts from prison on the raid and closure of RFE/RL Baku bureau
On December 31, Khadija was able to briefly talk to Azadliq Radio. Here is a short excerpt translated from the original piece.
"To my colleagues at Azadliq Radio
My dearest, be strong! Too bad, I am not by your side, and cannot help you cope with these difficult times. I am certain; this test will only strengthen our will.
It is normal that people and an organization involved in spreading the free speech, deliver alternative opinions and fact checked news is facing pressure. It is natural.
Under any circumstance we must continue our service to Azerbaijan’s people and the world. With all possible means! I love you very much. It is an honor to be on the same team with you.
It is not going to be possible to suffocate free speech and alternative opinions!"
Khadija Ismayilova named Truthdigger of the week
"Every week the Truthdig editorial staff selectes a Truthdigger of the Week, a group or person worthy of recognition for speaking truth to power, breaking the story or blowing the whistle."
Truthdig named Khadija Ismayilova as the Truthdigger of the Week. A month into her arrest, Khadija remains in jail despite her accuser withdrawing his original complaint and international calls demanding her immediate release.

Khaled Hosseini, author of many books including the best selling novel "The Kite Runner" joins PEN in calling for Khadija Ismayilova's release.
"As a writer, I value as sacred the freedom to write and share ideas without fear of persecution, a liberty essential to any sort of meaningful dialogue. The Azerbaijani government's many attempts to silence Khadija and strip her of this freedom speak volumes about her courage and influence in the face of extreme oppression", said Hosseini.
Khadija translated Hosseini's best selling novel "The Kite Runner" into Azerbaijani few years back.
"I am honored that Khadija was the voice that brought my story to Azerbaijan. Now it is my time to add mine to hers. I hope the world will join me in calling for her immediate release and unconditional return to her important work as a journalist."
