Khadija Ismayil's life struggle [video in Azerbaijani]
Elmira Ismayilova talks about her daughter, her childhood and her career.
Khadija is the last child of the family. Her mother considered abortion when both her parents learned the baby's gender. But eventually she decided to have her. Khadija was the family's favorite.
So Khadija's struggle began even before she was born.
On her personal blog, Khadija once wrote: "I escaped abortion. My parents decided to have an abortion when they learned the baby was a girl. Maybe I am ungrateful, but what I feel isn't gratitude or happiness. What I feel - is the weight of being a woman. A woman whose struggle in thiscountry began even before her birth".
Elmira Ismayilova says whenever Khadija finished a new investigation she would be the happiest person. "Every single story she investigated was detailed and always backed up." Khadija's mother says she would never publish a story that wasn't backed up by facts.
She says she was aware of her daugther's work, and that both suspected an arrest as a result of it. "My daughter is an investigative journalist. She investigated them [the family] and they didn't like this. But if they lived honestly then she wouldn't investigate their lives, their businesses" says Elmira.
Khadija's mother says she talks to her once every week. "She always sounds in good spirits, sending her support to her friends. But when the Radio was sealed shut, she was sad she couldn't be with her colleauges. She asked me to tell the team how much she wished she was there."
"I wanted her to have a family. To see little Khadija. But Khadija made a choise not to have a family because of her work."
