BAKU, February 3, 2014 (RFE/RL Azerbijani Service) -- Azerbaijani parliament speaker Oqtay Asadov has called on religious clerics in the country to perform their prayers in Azerbaijani, not in Arabic. Talking at the parliament's session on Monday, Asadov said that since all the verses of the Holy Koran have been fully translated into Azerbaijani, it would be better if all the prayers during sermons or events linked to religious services were performed in Azerbaijani to make it easier for people to fully understand what the prayer is about.

Meanwhile, in accordance with regulations in Islam, the religion based on strict rules, all prayers must start with verses in the Arabic language from the Koran, which even in the Arabic language have different interpretations, and later proceed in a native language. Azerbaijani Mufti, A. Pashazade did not react to Asadov's call yet.
