"Russian Bazar" in Sabunchu district of Baku

Photographer Famil Mahmudbeyli captured a day in the life of some of the residents of this district for RFERL Azerbaijan service. He visited one of the local "flea markets", not to be mistaken with the flea market of Europe often known for their bohemian, hipster styles. This local "bazar" is known from the Soviet times as "Kolkhoz bazar" or "second hand" market. For many poorer families of Baku, this has been the shopping spot where one can find any used goods.

Today, it is known more as a "Russian bazar".

Because the end of the market is actual rubbish dump not many people come this way. That is why often traders try finding spots closer to the center. Because this is not most popular location, a spot here costs only 1AZN (1.27USD/1.02EUR).

"I used to work at the shoe factory near Boyuk Sor during the Soviet Union until 1994. That factory used to meet the needs of the shoe market in Baku and across many other regions in Azerbaijan. Then the factory stopped operating. We turned to Turkey for foreing goods. My last address was this market where I sell shoes and knick-knacks".
