November 17, the head of AzTelekom, Mahammad Mammadov was detained and sentenced to three months in pretrial detention. He is charged with appropriation, abuse of power, and forgery.

Also deatined was AzTelekom’s head accountant Oqtay Rustamov.

The arrest comes in the aftermath of a series of high profile government official dismissals. On November 12, the minister of Communication and High Technologies Ali Abbasov was dismissed from his post.

Currently, the ministry is under investigation by the prosecutor office agency against corruption. The prosecutor office is claiming a group made of high-ranking officials engaged in corruption is unmasked.

In a statement issued by the prosecutor office, the ministry is accused of systematic budget theft, corruption schemes, misappropriation and embezzlement of state property.

AzTelekom is one of the companies working closely with the Ministry in Azerbaijan.

Another state institution that recently came under scrutiny is the Ministry of National Security. Several employees of the ministry were detained including the staff from the department intercepting phone calls.

The minister Eldar Mahmudov himself was dismissed from his position on October 17 and currently remains under house arrest.

On November 15, the former head of the Energy and Transportation Security Department of the Ministry of National Security, Akif Chovdarov (also known as the Godfather of the Ministry of National Security) was sentenced to three months of pretrial detention. He is charged with abuse of power, taking bribes, and illegal arrest of people.
