In her letter dated January 3, Yunus describes in detail the on-going abuse she is facing in prison and in the most recent case – the humiliation during the medical examination.
On December 29, Yunus was thoroughly examined in the presence of a German doctor. The doctor never left Yunus’s site until the electrpcardiogram test. “During the cardiogram test I was told to take off my sweater and stand against the wall.15 minutes later I turned around and saw a male prison guard looking at my naked body and grinning.”
“This is the regular kind of abuse I am facing for the reasons not clear to me” she wrote.
Leyla Yunus is the director of Peace and Democracy Institute. Together with husband Arif Yunus, the couple was engaged in “public diplomacy” initiatives with neighboring Armenia.
Yunus is accused of treason. She was arrested on July 30, 2014 and sentenced to three months in pre-trial detention. She is also facing charges of tax evasion, illegal business and abuse of authority.
