While the dust from the European Games not even settled, Azerbaijan already kicks off preparations for the 2016 Formula One race.
Chingiz Mehdiyev, who heads operations department for the Baku Grand Prix, said on Wednesday, June 23 Baku was on track.
"We are working on the project, we have almost completed the project, now we are going through some stages of homologation and after that stage we can already start working on actually building", said Mehdiyev.
The fact that the race will be within the city is "fantastic" thinks Mehdiyev.
"It will go all around the old city, which is a UNESCO heritage area, which involves very stiff turns, inclines, declines. So I think it will be a challenge for the drivers."
This is going to be the country's first time hosting Formula One race.
Azad Rahimov, the minister of youth and sports, finds the event important step in placing the country on the sporting map and shares the excitement of Mehdiyev. It is going to be "one of the best races in the world," he said.
