April 14, Azerbaijan was downgraded to "candidate country" by the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) following an early validation report.
A day before the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) meeting in Brazzaville a letter signed by more than 280 civil society groups from over 35 countries called on the EITI to address Azerbaijan's unprecedented crackdown on its independent civil society groups.
According the press statement issued by the EITI following the decision, Azerbaijan remains an EITI member however in order to regain its compliant status it must implement corrective actions within 12 months. Otherwise, it will be suspended.
