Today around 200 students staged a protest in front of the building of the Baku's State University. The action was prompted by the government’s decision to raise a reexamination fees. Several of protesters told RFE/RL correspondent that new rules are "illegal and only designed to extract money from students." The event was unauthorised. Police briefly detained four students. The President of the University, Abel Maharramov promised to discuss the issue with the representatives of the Ministry of Education.
The Baku State University (BDU) is the oldest and largest school in Azerbaijan.
It was founded during the independence years of Azerbaijan"s Democratic Republic in 1919.
